6 Chores You May Be Doing Wrong

Image

Ah, home remodeling. After many years of planning, you finally have that Instagram-worthy bathroom and kitchen. Premier Remodeling designed everything the way you wanted it and it looks absolutely gorgeous. You wish it would stay brand new forever.

Unfortunately, life happens. You hosted family, cooked tasty meals, and enjoyed your new dual shower heads. So how do you keep your home remodel looking pristine? Read on to see what household chores you may be doing wrong.

Putting steak and cooking knives in the dishwasher will dull their blades over time, making them unsafe to use.

1. Keep Your Knives Sharp

You might be eager to use your new dishwasher.  Who wouldn’t? Before remodeling your home, the only dishwasher you had was your own two hands. Now the only thing your hands do is load the dishes and soap! Easy, right?

While most kitchen utensils can ride the Whirlpool to Clean Town, putting steak and cooking knives in the dishwasher will dull their blades over time and can make them unsafe to use. Instead, wash them by hand. It only takes a few moments and will keep your cutlery sharp.

Never soak cast iron. The more water it comes in contact with, the more rust spots it will develop.

2. Quick Dry Cast Iron

A well-seasoned cast iron can be a pleasure to have in your kitchen. It’s almost impossible to make frittatas and cornbread without one. Just be sure to only use warm water and a stiff brush when it’s time to clean. By using soap not only would you wash away food, but you’d also wash away the protective season cast irons need to last.

Also, never soak cast iron. The more water it comes in contact with the more rust spots it will develop. So when you’re done cleaning pop it back on the stove to cook off any residual moister.

3. Not Just For Ovens

4. Bust the Dust

Did you know that oven cleaner can be used in more places than ovens? If you’ve got a stainless steel pan you use daily there are no doubt stains soap and water hasn’t been able to wash away.

To really give the grime its eviction notice, spray a layer of over cleaner over the pan.  Depending on the amount of build up you can let the oven cleaner sit for 30 minutes-2 hours. Then take a scrubbing pad and with a little work, the pan should shine like the day you bought it!

Coffee filters are designed to let water pass through, but not impurities, so they’ll be able to sop up the Windex and stains while keeping your windows and mirrors fleck-free!

5. Starbuck’s Approved Cleanup

Speaking of windows, do you ever use a paper cloth or rag to clean, but hate the flecks they leave behind? Try coffee filters instead.

Starbucks swears by this method! Filters are designed to let water pass through, but not impurities, so they’ll be able to sop up the Windex and stains while keeping your windows and mirrors fleck-free.

6. The Daily Shower Cleaner

Do you hate wasting a Saturday detailing your shower? Instead of fruitless scrubbing, try this daily shower cleaner.  Take a 32-oz spray bottle and a funnel. In the funnel, add:

  • 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1/2 hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1-2 teaspoons dish soap

Add the spray top back on and gently tip the bottle back and forth to mix. After every shower, spray a light mist over the shower bottom and sides to fight mold and dirt build up. Now your weekly cleaning will be a simple wipe job.

Generic melamine sponges work the same as name brand.

Bonus Tip:

If you use magic erasers but hate their high cost, search for melamine sponges on Amazon. This generic version works like the name brand at a fraction of the cost.
